TV, Movies & Video Games (continued)

3.     If you do have to go to the movie theater, try the following to save:

a.  Try going to the “early bird” specials or afternoon matinees rather than the evening shows.  Ticket prices are normally 25%-50% less in the afternoon.  Some theaters also have one night a week when ticket prices are discounted or summer specials once a week for kids.

b.  Consider going to see movies that have not been released in the last several weeks.  Often, ticket prices for these movies will be discounted at some theaters.

c.  Discounted movie tickets can be purchased ahead of time from movie theaters, at several Internet sites, as well as at retail stores like Costco.  The savings can be 25%-50%.  Entertainment coupon books are also available which often provide discounts at movie theaters.  If you belong to organizations like AAA they sometimes also sell discounted movie tickets.

d.  Some movie chains also have movie clubs where you receive rewards in the form of free movie tickets or free food and drinks at the theater.  If you go to the movies a lot, look into these offers.  For instance, AMC theaters has a club called Movie Watcher which can be accessed at MovieWatcher.com.

e.  While movie theaters obviously frown on this, consider bringing some candy or other small snack with you to the theater, instead of paying the inflated prices at the counter.

4.     What about those video games your kids (and even you) like to play.

a.  See if your library has any video games either for free or for rent.

b.  Coordinate your purchases with friends and neighbors, so you have different games you can swap back and forth.

c.  Buy used games from game retailers, Internet sites, DVD rental stores, etc.

d.  If you are not one to play most games on a continual basis, try renting games from retail rental stores, or from companies that deliver through the mail such as GameFly.com.

e.  And don’t forget about all those games available over the Internet.  Many are free.

Radio, MP3’s & CD’s

Music, and other forms of audio entertainment are as popular as ever, and are available in even more formats.  A lot of enjoyment can be had for a minimal amount of money, with a little effort.

1.     Today, radio is more popular and varied than ever.  You can find almost any kind of entertainment you could want.  Try spending a little and getting a lot.

a.  Good old AM/FM radio is still out there.  While still popular while in your car, it can also be fun to listen to at home or work.  Try it, it’s free.

b.  Radio stations may also be available through your cable and satellite TV provider at little or no cost.  This is a source of entertainment that is often missed by radio fans.

c.  Radio stations are also available for free over the Internet.  And the variety is great. You can even tune into podcasts on almost any topic.  Consider using this free radio that many people ignore.

d.  Of course, the newest in radio is satellite radio.  At $10-$15 per month it can be a great buy if you drive a lot and reception is poor, or if you like a lot of variety.  But if you really do not use it for anything other than “standard” radio fare, do you really need to spend over $100 per year?

2.     Music is no doubt the most popular form of audio entertainment.  Great music can be found from many sources.  In today’s world, there is no need to spend a lot of money on CD’s to hear that favorite song or artist.

a.  In addition to the radio options noted above, all kinds of music are generally available from your cable or satellite provider.  Several channels on your cable and satellite system are dedicated to all types of music.  The quality is good, but if you have your TV hooked up to a stereo or surround sound system, quality is outstanding.  So, if you like to listen to music at home, try the music available from your local cable or satellite TV provider at no extra cost.  You may even be able to hook up earphones so you can listen all you want without bothering others.

b.  If you are into MP3 players, you already are aware of sources of music for these devices, and your ability to only buy and download the specific songs you want. While some problems have occurred with copyright issues, there are legitimate sources of low-cost and even free music that can be loaded onto your MP3 player. And more sources are being developed everyday, so keep looking around for good deals on music downloads.

c.  If you are into CD’s and you do not listen to them that often, consider borrowing them from the library.  CD’s are not only available for music, but for many other types of entertainment.  Depending on the library, the selection may be fairly good. This is an especially useful practice if you borrow before you buy, to make sure you really do need the CD.
