Moving Day

Moving day will be extraordinarily busy and probably frustrating, and if you are moving yourself it will be physically taxing.  Organizing your own move on moving day can be challenging, but at least you are in control of the situation.  When using professional movers, they are moving as fast as they can, and your ability to ensure everything is organized and accounted for will require concentration and constant attention.  If you want to increase the chances that everything has the best chance of arriving in one piece with minimum damage, make sure you do the following:

1.     Agree with the moving company as to when they will arrive the day of the move, and whether all items will be loaded onto their truck in one day or two.  Make sure they understand that being prompt is expected.

2.     Be prepared for their arrival and discuss with the moving supervisor on site how they plan on managing the move, and what system they will use to ensure goods are protected and accounted for.

3.     Make sure everything you are planning on moving yourself is either in your cars, or put in a closet somewhere in the house, with a sign that instructs the movers not to touch or pack the items.  Otherwise, all those valuables and necessities that you were planning on taking yourself will end up somewhere on the moving truck.

4.     Have your numbered packing list ready and record all items on your list as they take them from your home in order to load them on the truck.  Record the numbers they place on items next to the numbers you placed on items when they were packed.

5.     Make sure to note any damage to your goods that existed prior to the movers moving the goods.  Also, make sure you and the mover agree to the extent of the damage, and that any notes made by the mover regarding pre-existing damage are accurate.  These notes will directly affect your ability to make a successful claim for any damages caused by the movers.

6.     Do not be afraid to mention to the supervisor or any of the movers anything you feel is not being handled correctly.  If they know you are concerned they will most likely be more careful.

7.     When the loading is completed make sure everything has been loaded, and you agree with the moving supervisor that the list of your goods that they have prepared is accurate and complete.  Also make sure you agree with any damage remarks the movers have placed on the list.  This will directly affect any claims you may have for damage when your goods arrive at your new home.  Make sure you receive a copy of the list of items on the truck.  And confirm with the moving supervisor when they expect to deliver your goods to your new home.

8.     Before leaving your old home and saying goodbye remember to turn off the water heater if appropriate, lower the thermostat, turn off any unnecessary lights and lock the doors and windows.  Also, remember to clean the house to the accepted “broom clean” standard.  Arrange to have any keys provided to the new owner at closing, or returned to the rental office.

Closing & Opening Household Accounts

In addition to making sure you have the right movers and making sure they do their job properly, many other activities have to be planned and accomplished for your move to be successful.  Here they are:

1.     Make sure to cancel your old utility services (electric, gas, water, phone, cable, trash, etc.) and to open accounts for services at your new home.  Schedule termination of services not required to maintain your old home either on midnight the day of your move, or perhaps one day later in case there is some delay in moving.  Services required to maintain your old home should be turned off (or responsibility for the accounts transferred to the new owner) effective with closing the sale of your home.  And make sure the utility has your new address to forward any final bill, as well as collect any deposits you originally placed to open the account.  If possible, schedule new services to be turned on at 12:01 AM the day you are scheduled to arrive at your new home, if  this did not already occur based on closing the purchase of your new home.

2.     Collect other deposits such as security deposits and pet deposits.  And look into partial refunds of any dues you have paid or memberships that you need to terminate, transfer or sell.

3.     Do not forget about any items you may have placed on layaway, or items that are being cleaned, stored or repaired.  If you maintain a locker at the fitness club, bowling alley, etc. make sure to clean it out.

4.     Make sure you provide change of address notifications to your bank, credit cards, insurance companies, doctors, magazines, post office, IRS, etc.

5.     Before moving day arrives, be sure to plan how to best utilize food and other perishables so they are fully used up.  While you can always give a few odds and ends to friends the day of the move, ending up with half a freezer full of meats that have to be given away is costly.
